Elements for sustainable managment

Improving water sustainability in Spain have been debated in many forums and from different perspectives. Among them is the study for the "Use of the Water in the Spanish Economy: situation and perspectives". Its main proposals include:

• The new water planning must be done on the basis of realistic estimations of available resources and improving our understanding of water masses such as rivers, aquiferous, associate ecosystems and coastal waters.
  
  
• Is necessary an effort that would contribute to increase the mentality about sustainable management. An effort to change popular attitudes is essential to achieve the goals.
  
  

It is also necessary to assure the sustainability of the territorial development model in agreement with all interested parties and on the basis of a close collaboration between local policies and government administrations.

There exists the potential of reutilization of purified waste water in the industry that will develop depending on the evolution of the technical, economical and legal context.

In urban water supplies the implementation of the DMA can result in important savings in water treatment as consequence of the improvement of the qualitative conditions of the water masses. The utilization of not conventional resources, such as desalted waters can help to increase the guarantee, but presents many challenges. Likewise, there exists an important potential of reduction of the water usage by means of the improvement of the piping system.

In the tourist sector exist solid opportunities for saving by improving the efficiency of the facilities so that the predictable growths in the demand to a great extent can be satisfied by these improvements. Beyond these improvements of efficiency there is imposed the need to change the tourist model to a more sustainability system.
