Tourism is a strategic activity in Spain. It is second largest tourist destination in the world in number and in total
spending. Tourism does not demand a large volumes of water, although the ratios of water consumption per tourist are
larger than the national users. Seasonal tourism exerts additional pressure on the water supply system in Southern Europe
given that the use of water by tourists is double than that of local consumers and luxury activities require large volumes
of water.
In recent years, there has been a larger growth in tourism in non-traditional areas like in the north and the interior parts
of Spain and Portugal
On the other hand, the low level of year round occupancy due to the cyclic behaviour of the market and the large number of
vacation homes along the coast make water management companies over design water infrastructures (to be able to deliver
during season peaks) which in turn raises the cost of delivering and treating the water for all users.
